Arsenal fan hits Dele Alli with bottle, Spurs win

Dec. 20 (UPI) — Tottenham star Dele Alli reminded a fan of the 2-0 score after being hit by a bottle during Spurs’ win against Arsenal.

The star forward was on the sideline in the 73rd minute after the ball went out of bounds on Wednesday at Emirates Stadium in London.

He was walking away when a bottle came flying in and hit him in the back of the head. Alli briefly held his head before being examined by the official. He also held up a two with one hand and a zero with the other, indicating the score for the crowd.

Son Heung-min started the scoring for Spurs with a goal in the 20th minute. Tottenham held the narrow lead through halftime before Alli added some insurance in the 59th minute of the Football League Cup quarterfinal.

Spurs star Harry Kane blasted up a pass to Alli during a breakaway. Alli settled the ball with the side of his foot, bringing it down at the top of the box. He tapped the ball over Gunners keeper Petr Cech for a 2-0 lead.

“It made the goal a little bit sweeter and the win,” Alli told Sky Sports after the match, when asked about the bottle.

Arsenal issued a statement on Thursday and has identified the bottle-thrower. The Premier League club said it was “embarrassed” by the incident.

“Behavior of this type has no place at Emirates Stadium and after analyzing CCTV footage, which showed him leaving the stadium after throwing the bottle, we have identified an image of the suspect,” Arsenal said. “We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit.”

“We are not responsible for the actions of one individual, but send our apologies to Dele Alli and everyone at Tottenham Hotspur for this incident.”

“We do not tolerate any anti-social, discriminatory or violent behavior at Arsenal Football Club. Anyone identified will receive a lengthy club ban and their details will be passed to the police to commence legal proceedings.”

Spurs battle Everton in the Premier League at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Goodison Park in Liverpool, England. The Gunners host Burnley FC at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at Emirates Stadium.
